Catalogue for Still Art Foundration created in partnership with Lunar Hare for Dmitry Bulin's personal exhibition "Codex Rescriptus", part of the Photo Biennale 2022 at the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow.
A graduate of the VGIK Film School, Dmitry Bulin is a young photographer, knowledgeable about the history of art and cinema. He reinterprets the stylistic and semantic components of art movements from the Northern Renaissance to the greatest cinema of the 20th century, focusing on the modern age problems. Our team worked under the curatorship of the Lunar Hare agency to design the album for Dmitry Bulin's exhibition “Codex Rescriptus”, part of the Photo Biennale 2022 at the Multimedia Art Museum. The exhibition was initiated by the Still Art Foundation.
The album consists of the photo series documenting the evolution of Dmitry’s artistic journey. It begins with his earlier series, “Where the Wild Roses Grow” and “Exposing the Dandy” and progresses into his more mature work — “The Topsy-Turvy World” and “5 Dollar Beauty”, which gained public acclaim. The layout of each series slightly changes, taking inspiration from the artistic movements Dmitry turns to while maintaining consistency of the design by using two typefaces — a serif Oceanic Text and Forma DJR Grotesk. In the “The Topsy-Turvy World”, Dmitry reinterprets twelve Flemish proverbs by Peter Bruegel The Elder, meticulously reconstructing the famous piece with DIY props, theatrical garments, and carefully selected models. He pays close attention to detail, supporting his work with references and sketches. Most of Dmitry’s photographs are intended to be seen in a large format, so we included two gatefolds in the layout, allowing the viewers to see the details up close.
We designed the layout for the book, and also supported the production process from the selection of materials to preparation for printing.
